Any image that carries the mark of abstraction opens itself up to a variety of readings towards understanding, oftentimes from the traditions of art history and media theory, or otherwise in the natural will towards recognition, resolution of pattern. In seeking to create a separate world of marks and meaning, these images find themselves placed in an impossible position. My work is aimed at this, irresolvable, tension between the space within and outside the frame.

My experience of the process of marking, making of images, is not consciously engaged in the work of representation, nor in the creation of signs readily readable to an observer. It is, in fact, a strange surprise when a piece seems to become clearly semiotic to another. While that chance system of reference is enjoyable, it is not my project.

I don’t conceive of my work as a radically idiosyncratic project. My preference is simply to refrain from reading painting—instead I want to prioritize the experience of seeing differently. Facing a painting can be that experience of the subjective against the object-hood of the world, made all the more eerie by the prickling knowledge that what you are seeing was created by another subject/subjects. What I mean by this is that, when visually engaged with a piece of artwork, the viewer brings to bear the simultaneity of their physically bounded experience with seemingly infinite semiosis.

In advocating for this primacy of phenomenal, visual experience, I mean to suggest both where I might be found in this work, and what more generally may be present inside it. I love lines and color, I take specific joys in laying down certain marks and working over others, in the movement between maker and observer. In that process, things emerge, lines of thought, transformations, slow and rapid becomings or unravelings. Shifting between the action of the hand and evaluation of the result mirror and evokes the movement a mind can make from the tiny and abstract, the structural, the deeply personal, the massively statistical, the planet from space, those YOU Are HERE milky way diagrams.
